Take These 6 Confidence Building Vitamins Every Day

Imagine for a moment if you had the confidence of Jack Welch, Simon Sinek, Oprah Winfrey or even Elon Musk. Can you imagine how differently you would lead your people and the aspirations you would have for your life? Having a deep level of belief in yourself can fast track your progress and help you achieve things you didn’t even think were possible.

Want to build more confidence in yourself and your team?

Building confidence needs to be a conscious effort. All opportunities wont come knocking on our door, we need to go and knock on some doors ourselves and ask. Yes, getting rejected and failing is part of it, but keep going, this rejection and push back are just hurdles on the journey and will help build more character and resilience.

Try these 6 things everyday to build more confidence.

1) Turn up — whatever you are working on, continue to turn up. If you are feeling discomfort that’s because you are going through a growth phase. You’ll get those thoughts in your mind, telling you ‘you can’t do this’, ‘what if I fail’ — turning up every day to work through that discomfort will do wonders for your confidence and all those little daily wins add up! Keep going.

2) Uncomfortable — if you continue to do things that make you feel good or comfortable, then you’re probably not stretching yourself and definitely not growing. If you do not have a sense of enjoyment, growth or progression you will stagnate and end up with a feeling of unfulfillment. Put yourself out there. Put your hand up for new projects or initiative. Speak to your leader and ask for candid feedback on what you need to improve on and how can they support you in getting there.

3) Speak up — ‘what will people think, that might not make sense’ — speaking up will help you build more belief in what you are doing and help you overcome that fear. Speaking up in meetings and at toastmasters events helped me develop a stronger belief in myself. Look for opportunities to speak in public settings and share the value you have.

4) Practice — like any skill. You improve your comfort level and confidence by practicing. If you are delivering a presentation or talk: Deliver it. Get feedback. Edit. Repeat. You almost need to think to yourself, I need to deliver this presentation 30 times. Essentially fail 30 times in private. The quicker you can get to the 31st attempt the better, it will be a day and night difference I can tell you. Imagine the difference between your 1st delivery and your 31st? Read any speaking/TED Talk book, there is no secret to becoming a professional speaker. It’s all in the practice. Repetition is the mother of skill.

5) Mentor — save yourself a lot of time. Get a Mentor or Coach. Find people who are where you want to be and spend as much time with them as possible. Their confidence is infectious and it will develop deeper levels of belief in yourself. They’ll subtly influence how you behave for the better. Listen and observe how they think and approach things, you’ll learn so much in a short period of time from spending time with the right people.

6) Win List — create a document called ‘My Win List’. Now begin maintaining a list of all your significant wins. Date, Challenge, My Win and Why was this Win important. It might be you got the job, you ran a PB, you had a difficult conversation with someone or maybe something more healthy, like you have stayed off sugar for a week. Whatever it is, if it was difficult or challenging and you were successful, write it down. So next time you are going through challenging times or experiencing self doubt, look at your win list and celebrate how far you have come. You cannot be afraid if you are grateful for your achievements to date.

We all have our own limiting beliefs which impact our confidence. Whether it’s we’re no good at something or we’ll try when we have more experience. Whatever it is, just because we are not there today doesn’t mean we cannot be there tomorrow, if we apply ourselves and take action. Taking more action, and with a higher level of certainty can be done by practicing consistency some of the ideas above. This will ultimately establish deeper levels of belief, elevate our level of thinking and help us get to wherever we are going a lot quicker.

All the best,

David
